Founded in 1906 by Charles Smead, the Smead Manufacturing Company started out making a single product called the Bandless File. Mr. Smead created the Bandless File, but was unable to find a manufacturing company willing to produce it. Undaunted, he incorporated Smead and decided to manufacture it internally.
In 1916, Charles Smead decided to retire and sold the business to the Hoffman family. Based in Hastings, MN, Smead still owned by the Hoffmans, and has been a woman owned business since 1955. Under the leadership of mother-daughter team Ebba Hoffman and Sharon Avent, Smead has become industry leader in organizational products and organizational systems.
