Cash Registers

Cash registers are electronic devices used by businesses to record and process sales transactions. Modern day cash registers are built to operate on bar codes, UPC codes, or price entry. Most cash registers feature an internal database where all the data is stored and accessed. In addition to recording sales, cash registers can also do the following:

• Calculate sales tax
• Inventory control (depending on the model)
• Apply applicable discounts
• Provide the customer a printed receipt
• Provide end of day reports

Small to medium sized businesses with a single check-out point can usually operate using a single register. Larger business or stores that require multiple cash register check-out locations are probably better served with a point of sale (also called a POS) system. Point of sale systems consist of multiple electronic cash registers or PC's connected to a central processing unit. POS systems are significantly more expensive than a standard cash register and will require additional support to maintain.

The most basic components of a simple cash register are the customer and operator displays, the keyboard, the printer for printing receipts and the internal memory of the machine. The choice of a cash register system depends on the size of the establishment and the volume of business.
