A briefcase is a rectangular case that is equipped with a handle, and generally used to carry papers or documents. The "briefcase" name came from the fact that this style of case was commonly used by lawyers to carry documents called court briefs. Attorney's began calling it a briefcase, and the name stuck. Although opinions vary, creation of the first modern style briefcase that was see today is attributed to an inventor named Jeremy Stenning in 1858.
